The area petroleum industry is actively involved to the degree that the curriculum was designed in consultation with area oil men, among them: E. James Bryner, president, Pennsylvania Oil & amp; Gas Association; Dale F. Fox, vice president, Oil & amp; Gas Producing Division, Kendall / Amalie Division, Witco Chemical Corporation; and D. Raymond Perry, Jr., district production manager, Pennzoil Company. The curriculum offers options in pro- duction and refining, introduction to pet- roleum engineering, surveying, drilling- completion - production, petroleum geology, secondary recovery, environ- mental control, gathering - transportation - - storage, stagewise unit processes and petroleum chemistry. A two- year course of study enables the student to work in the industry with an associate of science degree as an engineering associate. The student has the option, however, of continuing toward a bachelor's degree, and mathematics, sciences and liberal arts courses are of- fered for this purpose. August Freda, chairman, Division of Engineering and Computer Science, said: . Trhe campus sits in the middle of one of the major producing areas - the Bradford Field. Much of it is turned into a high grade lubricating oil known throughout the world for maintaining its uniformity and for maintaining its qualities despite extreme changes of temperature and pressure. The Bradford area produces about eighty- five per cent of the oil produced in Pennsylvania and has produced some four hundred eighty billion barrels since the Bradford Field was discovered in 1.

Frederick Kaufman, Professor of Chemistry and Director of the University's Space Research Coordination Center, is shown with a sec- tion of the special lamp that was mounted on the exterior of the Apollo Spacecraft. It emitted light toward the Russian Soyuz Spacecraft in an experiment checking the atomic oxygen and atomic nitrogen in the at- mosphere. Much of the work on the special lamp and the technique of conducting the experiment was worked out in the laboratories at Pitt. Pitt'Space First Works, An historic, two- spaceship experiment that began in the laboratories of the University of Pittsburgh was completed in three orbits around the earth by the American Apollo and Russian So yuz 1. The experiment was designed largely by Pitt personnel, including Dr. Frederick Kaufman, professor of chemistry and director of the University's Space Research Coordination Center. As co- investigator of the Ultraviolet Absorption Experiment, Dr. Kaufman reported that the experiment would measure the atomic oxygen and atomic nitrogen in the earth's upper atmosphere by measuring the absorption of ultraviolet light coming from space lamps mounted on the Apollo spacecraft and reflected back by the Soyuz spacecraft. The experiment is based on the principle that atoms absorb and emit light at specific spectral wavelengths. At present the abundance of atomic oxygen and atomic nitrogen in the earth's upper atmosphere are not accurately. The oxygen has been measured by mass spectroscopy but the technique has certain inherent faults and the answer co*id be off by as much as a factor of ten. The nitrogen at this height has never been measured. We can also gather some hard data on the amounts of atomic nitrogen existing there, about which there are many discordant theories. Further, he continued, . Possibly, too, it will give us confirmation of what we think takes place. Werner Gerhard Werner, M. D., has been ap- pointed dean of the'School of Medicine. As in boom town tradition, also came the sporting set, frequenting Main Street with its lively bands, dance halls of dubious complexion, dram shops; , and gambling dens. The people of Bradford have a keen historical awareness. The annals. of the area are being recorded by several painstaking people, and the physical evidence of such annal s is being treasured by the Landmark Society. While the experiment was conceived, designed and carried out entirely by the United States, Dr. Kaufman emphasizes that the experiment could not be executed without the cooperation of the Russian ship.
